Driving to South Padre Island
Driving to South Padre Island can be an ordeal if you aren’t sure where you’re going. Since Texas is so big, many people are intimidated to drive through it! Fortunately, no matter which destination in the US you are traveling from, the set of directions is the same and is relatively simple. You’ll be on the shores of South Padre Island in no time!
Those coming in from the North will want to head south on US Highway 77 or 281. If you’re coming from the West, take Highway 83. Turn east on State Highway 100 and stay on Highway 100 until you see signs for South Padre Island. We’d recommend filling up your gas tank on the mainland, as South Padre Island transportation is not exactly designed for long-distance travel outside the island.
They say, “Everything’s bigger in Texas,” and you can truly understand that statement when you learn just how far South Padre Island is from other cities in the Lone Star State. From San Antonio, you’ll be driving nearly 300 miles. Coming from Austin? Expect a 340-mile drive. Houston is 376 miles away, Dallas is 565 miles away and El Paso is a whopping 885 miles away.
Don’t want to drive all that way? Consider flying!

Airports Near South Padre Island
Unfortunately, there are no airports on South Padre Island itself. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t fly into the area! Several airports on the mainland will put you close enough to SPI that you can rent a car for the rest of the journey. Plus, you’ll then have convenient transportation for driving around the island for the rest of your trip.
The closest airport to South Padre Island is either Brownsville South Padre Airport or Valley International Airport, both within 40 miles of South Padre Island. 40 miles is a short drive by rental car or taxi ride, so plan accordingly. Your wallet will thank you! Getting a rental car is likely much more affordable than hiring a taxi or a ride-sharing service to get you to the island.
Brownsville offers transportation options to and from the airport. If you don’t mind shuttle rides, multiple companies are offering free shuttle rides to and from both Brownsville and Valley International. You can hire car services such as Lisa Vega, South Padre Island Surf Shuttle, or the SPI – Shuttle. There are also a few private charter services in the area if you want a more upscale experience.
While Brownsville and Valley International are also the only airports located less than an hour from South Padre Island, you have one more option if you’re willing to make a longer drive: McAllen International Airport is about an hour and a half away from the island.
At Brownsville, you’ll find flights from American and United Airlines. Alternatively, Valley International Airport has flights with Southwest, United, American, Frontier, Delta, and Sun Country. Lastly, McAllen International Airport is served by AeroMar, American, Allegiant, and United.

South Padre Island Transportation
Transportation on South Padre Island can come in several different forms. If you are strictly searching for public transportation, you’ll be limited to the island shuttle. As the island is less than half a mile wide and the populated areas cover only five miles, the shuttle is all the transportation you’ll need. The shuttle runs all day and is very reliable, and you’ll find plenty of shuttle stops all around the island.
You can also walk just about anywhere on South Padre Island with little difficulty, so you are not forced to take the shuttle if you don’t want to. It’s vital to note, though, that you should never walk across the main road of South Padre Island to get to the beach. Walking on this road can be incredibly dangerous, so it’s always best to bike there, take a shuttle, or drive.
There are also plenty of bike racks, paths, and companies that will rent you a bike for the duration of your stay. Companies such as Speedy Rentals, SPI Fun Rental, SPI Activities, and Beach Bikes on Padre can help you get a set of wheels for everyone in the family. Of course, if you do have your car, you can drive around the island as well. There are even some areas where you can drive on the South Padre Island beach itself!
