South Padre Island golf is fantastic! Since the island is located at the tropical tip of Texas, weather conditions make playing year-round golf a way of life. Golf enthusiasts come from all over the country and beyond to enjoy our golf culture. Courses come in all varieties, lengths, and skill levels. Within 45 minutes of South Padre Island are six 18 hole public courses.
South Padre Island in most places is less than half a mile wide, and because ways to play golf ON the water have not yet been invented, the South Padre Island Golf Club is on the mainland. Located in Laguna Vista, across the Queen Isabella Memorial Causeway and a short distance up Hwy 100, the South Padre Island Golf course is nearby. In less than 20 minutes from your vacation rental door you are unloading clubs in the drop area. If you did not bring clubs, rentals are available.
At the South Padre Island Golf Club you are playing golf on the waterfront. Adjacent to the Laguna Madre, the course maximizes use of the natural terrain and shore lines while maintaining and enhancing the incredible subtropical vegetation we enjoy here in South Texas. Should you decide to venture farther, in Brownsville there is the Valley International Country Club course and the Brownsville Country Club course. Both are mature courses surrounded by homes.
A little west of Brownsville is a mobile home community called River Bend Country Club. The River Bend Golf Course is located adjacent to the Rio Grande River. You literally are playing on the boarder of the United States and Mexico. We encourage you to avoid starting international incidents. Please avoid hitting balls across the river into Mexico. Though with the slice some of us have it may not be avoided.
Harlingen also offers two public 18 hole courses. The Tony Butler Golf Course is a mature municipal course with no homes nearby. It offers many water, sand and vegetation challenges. The grade variations for flat South Texas will surprise you. Likewise, the Treasure Hills Golf Course, while surrounded by some homes, offers grade variation, mature landscaping, and both wide and narrow fairways.
There are many great golf courses in the Rio Grande Valley. As you get west of Harlingen more options are available, but it takes you farther from the blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
