Finding the most optimal steps to overcoming any South Padre Island fishing challenge shouldn’t be a pain. In fact, whether you’re looking up details on the latest fishing tournament in South Padre Island or something else entirely, there’s plenty of information out there to help.
If you’ve ever been on a fishing charter in South Padre Island or have been part of a fishing tournament here, then you’ll know that the Ron Hoover Fishing Tournament is the one that tops them all. If you attend just one fishing tournament this year in the local area, try and make it that one. It’s worth every second!
About the Tournament

The cost of entry is as follows: a $500 boat and registration fee for up to 4 members, plus an extra $100 per each 2-night non-angler pass (all with a potential $100 late fee if entering later than June 15 each year). As for when to register and how, keep in mind that you’d fill out the form online, which you can find on the Ron Hoover Fishing Tournament’s website. Alternatively, you can print it out and fill it out manually, and then send it by mail. Remember to register by June 15 if you want to be included!
The whole event kicks off on Friday, July 29th, which is technically day 1 and registration day. Make your way to the South Padre Island Convention Center (lots of parking nearby!), from which on-site check-in and registrations start promptly at 5 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. Also, from 6 to 8 p.m., they have Heavy Hors D’oeuvres sponsored by Starcraft. So, if you’re hungry for a quick bite, make sure not to miss that. There’s also a Kevin Fowler Live Concert running from 7 to 9 as well as a mandatory captains’ meeting from 7 to 7:30.
If you get up early the next day, you can fish plenty: it’s open fishing from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. To weigh the fish you’ve caught, head over to Jim’s Pier anytime from noon to 2. You must be already standing in line by 2. They make no exceptions to this rule, so be sure to be there before the cutoff! The convention center reopens at 5:30 that same evening to begin with the awards ceremony and dinner (starting at 6, offering great appetizers, a main course and dessert). There will be comedians, door prizes and a grand award prize! The whole event ends around 9 that night.
Who Can Compete?
Now it’s time to talk about guided and non-guided divisions. These are the two main divisions that you’ll see when you come out to the tournament. Luckily, having two different divisions means that there is an option for nearly every competitor! No matter which division you’ll be competing in, keep in mind that it’s best to make all preparations at least 2 weeks in advance.
Guided Division
This division can have up to 3 members in each group participating, as opposed to the non-guided, which can have up to 4. With the cost being the same as that listed above, each member participating will get their full share of all the following (all included in that $500 price): full dinner for both nights, a concert ticket, admittance to the comedy show, and up to 4 raffle tickets per team for a chance to win either the Majek M2 or the Viking RV, up to 5 tickets to win a door prize, plus a bag that is loaded with other convenient goodies. Only anglers in the division can actually enter the event at that price, and any friends or family members not actively participating but coming on as guests of those participating in the Guided Division would be required to pay the additional price of a “social ticket” at whatever the vendor lists it for on the day of the event. Keep checking the entry form online for updates closer to the date of the competition!

Non-Guided Division
Much of the same information from above applies here. All prices and rules, though the same as for the Guided Division, are likewise subject to change either with or without notice. Again, keep checking the entry form for updates. Within the form, by the way, you will be required to fill out some basic information, such as listing your given team name as well as your division type. In addition, you will be asked the name or names of the sponsor(s) as well as your assigned or self-assigned boat captain (which can be chosen for you, or if in a team, you may select one as a team). You’ll also need to put in the full address of the enlister, the shirt size for each participant, plus a good contact email and phone number.

Charitable Giving
It’d be a crime not to speak to this: the portion of the proceeds going to Make A Wish. A great chunk of the final proceeds of the Ron Hoover Fishing Tournament will go toward helping kids who battle with unfortunate health conditions, mainly those residing within the beautiful nearby Rio Grande Valley. It’s been estimated that this powerhouse non-profit philanthropy agency grants a child’s wish approximately every half hour (or about every 34 minutes, to be more precise). You can rest easy at night knowing that your money is going toward a worthy cause.
Indeed, this top agency has taken it upon itself to once again listen to the cries of the kids in need and help in supporting this event. They have been around since the ‘80s and now hold over 40,000 different volunteers across the country, each making a proud difference in the lives of the ill, from their little own corner of America. Any young one between 2 and 18 years of age is a prime candidate for their help — they specialize in helping those in this age group who battle with everything from brain tumors to liver failures. More than 300,000 recorded wishes have been granted thus far, a numerical record the agency plans to break each year.
