Expect to get up close and personal with the turtles in residence, many of which came to the facility as rescues that the center had discovered to be sick or injured. Select rescues were determined to be unable to be rereleased into the wide, and they now serve as ambassadors educating others on conservation and its importance.
Visitors are encouraged to stroll through the facilities enjoying a self-guided tour that educates them about the various species of sea turtles that call the Gulf of Mexico their home.
South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center
The Birding and Nature Center on South Padre Island strives to educate visitors about the various bird species indigenous to the area and its natural environment, including flora and fauna. The center, which is a non-profit organization, places its emphasis on environmental and conservation awareness.
Guided tours are offered in the fall for those who wish to watch and experience the fall bird migrations. The center also sports an onsite alligator sanctuary, where they offer “gator talks” that educate all on the biology of alligators. You can even feed the gators in their pond.
Lastly, there is a tortoise exhibit where the kids can have fun feeding the tortoises, a gift shop, and a beautiful butterfly garden.
Admission for adults is $10, Seniors (65+) and students $8, and children (4-12) $5. There are no dogs permitted on the boardwalks.

The Largest Outdoor Sandcastle in the USA
South Padre Island has the sole distinction of being home to the largest outdoor sandcastle in the USA. Usually, when a sand castle is built, the tide will eventually come in and wash the creative endeavor away. However, this sandcastle still stands and is undeniably one-of-a-kind.
The feature is a permanent fixture on the island and was constructed with a whopping 150 tons of river sand. The castle was constructed in two segments, with the first segment built in 2013 and the second segment starting in 2015.

The Andy Bowie Park is located across from the Convention Center on the north end of San Padre Island. Several features are available at the park for visitors to enjoy, including picnic pavilions, areas for BBQing, sites for RV hookups, and fishing and swimming areas.
Adventure Park
The Adventure Park, owned by the Wells family for five generations, offers forty acres stretching from Laguna Madre Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The area is the perfect location for adventures while visiting the island.
Visitors can enjoy waters edge horseback rides on the beach while catching a view of various marine and shoreline life. The area is known for its lack of crowding, and there is even the option for a fun day of zip-lining.
For the younger visitors, there is a local petting barn containing a large variety of rescued birds and animals that now call the barn their forever home. Visitors can interact with the animals safely while being educated about them.
