Birding in South Padre Island

During migration, the birding and nature center acts as a crucial first landfall for birds of South Padre Island crossing the Gulf from Southern Mexico and northern Central America. After a spring storm, you are likely to spot stunning species of warblers, tanagers, orioles, and thrushes. In the wetlands, there are a variety of shorebirds and waterfowl, with a few endangered species such as the Brown Pelican, Piping Plover, and Peregrine Falcon. Take advantage of local expertise by joining a guided morning tour with an experienced naturalist. Tours start daily at 8:30am, and you can expect to add many new birds to your life list!

While visiting the center, you will have access to its full range of amenities. The center offers more than 3,000 feet of boardwalk, five bird blinds, a five-story tower for viewing the Laguna Madre, educational hands-on exhibits, auditorium with movies, butterfly garden, and a nature gift shop. The center also operates a nuisance alligator rescue, which takes in alligators from backyard ponds, pools, piers, and other situations where they have become a nuisance or endangered public safety. You may spot some of the younger alligators in the juvenile alligator pond!
